His calm, which is from above, enchanted me before his words lifted me above. Without your realising it, he makes you feel that he is one who "will not break a bruised reed, nor quench a smouldering wick" (Matthew 12:20).
A few of us from the Movement sat listening to him in 1985. I did not know him. In those days (as I still am) I was learning to spell out the alphabet of life in Christ, and yet my spiritual ignorance did not prevent me from perceiving that this person had much of God in him. The years passed, and this person is still the same, yesterday and today, and I am certain he will remain so forever.
Tony Khoury resembles no one. His character is part of his charm. He was not like the other officers of the Movement. I never heard him grow heated, yet his zeal was no less than the zeal of others. I knew him to be jealous for the Church of God, uncompromising over its faith and its renewal. People like him are distinguishing marks in the modern history of Antioch. His purity is testified to by all.
He neither wearies nor tires. He would arrive before us at the vigils, and be the first present at the prayers. A silent man who prays to his Lord, and his prayers are reflected on his person.
He may not speak much, but his silence says a great deal. Tony Khoury is "a crying silence."
I grew up, and my reverence for this person grew. His love and care for the Church of the Lord and for the Movement did not occupy me as much as his care for the person of every human being amazed me. Tony Khoury forgets no one, and no one forgets the good that Tony Khoury has done him.
He is a disciple of Christ. And what distinguishes the disciple of Christ is that he lives like his Master, teaches by his person, and has compassion on the poor in spirit such as I.
Poor toward his Lord and rich in his Lord. And from his poverty for God he enriched many.
This is Tony Khoury.
